REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDARLAMPUNG -- Lampung's robusta coffee production is predicted to shrink 30-40 percent this year on extreme weather last year.
"Last year too much rains resulted in the flowers of coffee to fall off especially in West Lampung," Deputy Chairman of the provincial branch of the Indonesian Association of Coffee Exporters (AEKI) Teddy Suryana said here on Wednesday.
Different from in previous years, coffee harvests in various areas in Lampung do not come at the same time, Teddy said.
He said coffee harvest that normally took place in July-September , may come later in November as a result of the extreme weather.
He said normally, coffee production in Lampung averaged 1 ton per hectare, but this year the production shrinks 30-40 percent.
Indonesia is the world's second largest producer of robusta coffee after Vietnam and Lampung contributes the largest portion to the country's total production.
Other robusta coffee producing provinces in Sumatra include Bengkulu, Jambi, and South Sumatra.
"The country's production of robusta coffee totaled 650,000 tons a year and southern Sumatra including Lampung account for 70 percent of the total production.
The country exports around 350,000 - 400,000 tons of the coffee bean production every year. Lampung alone exports around 170,000 tons of robusta coffee beans a year.
Indonesia is the world's largest exporter of coffee beans (including arabica coffee) after Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia.
