REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DENPASAR -- On Independence Day commemorated on Aug 17, the jail terms of some 24 foreign inmates housed in several prisons in the districts of Denpasar, Karangasem, Tabanan, and Bangli, Bali Province, were reduced.

"We hope the inmates would learn a lesson and never return to the prisons," Chairman of the Bali Office of the Law and Human Rights Ministry Maryoto Sumadi stated.

After attending the 72th anniversary of the Independence Day ceremony at the Denpasar Class II-A Prison in Kerobokan, Badung District, Thursday, Sumadi stated that Australian national Renae Lawrence, believed to be a drug dealer of the "Bali Nine" group, will receive a reduction in prison term of six months.

He added that Lawrence was currently jailed in Bangli prison.

Moreover, about 21 inmates in Kerobokan prison will receive remission along with two other foreign prisoners in the districts of Karangasem and Tabanan.

According to Sumadi, the reduction in prison term varies from one to six months.

Hence, the total number of inmates who received remission on Independence Day reached 1,113 people, including the 27 prisoners who were released.

Sumadi stated that on Aug 16, the authority in Bali had detained some 2,720 people, comprising 1,850 prisoners and 870 inmates. Due to the prison's limited space, the facility now was overcrowded by 1,543 people.

During Independence Day, the authority regularly grants remission to some inmates across the country.
