REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Telematics Society (Mastel) Head, Kristiono, said that Indonesia needs to prepare for 5G telecommunication technology, even though there are no countries that have implemented the technology for the masses so far.

"The 5G connection is still in its early stage and is still a long way ahead. There is no standardization as yet. Japan would be able to implement it by 2020 during Olympics, but Indonesia has still not decided about it. But this does not mean that we are not starting it at the earliest. In order to understand the connection technologies when it is implemented, we should be able to study about it from now," Kristiono said during the discussion of Indonesia in welcoming 5G era.

He hoped that the technology would benefit the people and the country when it is implemented. "We should not just become a market when Indonesia implements it; instead, we must have an important role in 5G ecosystem in the world," he remarked.

During the occasion, Human Resources Development Research Department Head of Ministry of Communication and Information, Basuki Yusuf Iskandar, stated that a complete preparation is needed to be able to implement 5G network in Indonesia.

"We still need to prepare the whole system, from the regulation, industry, social, and lots of it," he stressed.

Basuki stated that with 5G technology, data services would be dominant. "Now starting from data service, it would be dominant. We still do not have any vision on how we would manage data services to develop it here; but as predicted from our study, it would be very enormous and dominant," he revealed.

That is why the 5G connection technology would need a programmed, structured preparation, which involves operators and communities as well. "The industry, the ecosystem, as well as the people must be ready. It is not just an operator's priority only," he added.

According to Basuki, the implementation of technology would bring a huge impact to social system as well as to the social education system.

Meanwhile, right now, there are no other countries that have implemented the 5G technology fully in mass production. Japan would implement it during Olympics 2020.

Various global technology corporations are now competing to release 5G New Radio (%g NR) specifications, which would be 5G's standard, to be tested in 2019, earlier that its first prediction in 2020.
