REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) is set to submit the results of an advanced study on the revitalization of the Jakarta-Surabaya railway line to the government next week.

The advanced study is not a pre-feasibility study but offers a generalized picture of the revitalized railway line, BPPT Chief Unggul Priyanto stated here on Thursday.

"The pre-feasibility study will actually be completed only in December. However, at least next week, we will try to prepare a summary (of the study) as a conclusion," he noted.

The conclusion will be based on whether the revitalized railway line will use the existing railway tracks or need new ones, among other factors, he said.

The agency reached a decision on the two options after taking into account several aspects including costs, technology, and ideal planning for the development of a railway system in future, he remarked.

"For instance, if we are to build a new (railway line), it will be costlier, but it can be considered for the future," he explained.

The construction of a new railway line is more feasible, as the existing one will get busier in future, he said.

"If we use the existing railway track, we must consider a solution on how (a semi-fast train) can run at an average speed of 160 kilometers per hour. Too many small stations will affect (the speed of the semi-fast train), though it will not stop at the stations," he pointed out.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan had stated on Wednesday that the BPPT will submit the results of an advanced study on the revitalization of the Jakarta-Surabaya railway line next week.

"The BPPT chief has pledged to complete the advanced study on the Jakarta-Surabaya (revitalized) railway line next week," he added.
