Stop terrorizing HTI members: Mahfud MD

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Former Chairman of Constitutional Court Mohammad Mahfud MD said he personally agreed approved the dissolution of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia because it is disintegrative.

Nevertheless, he asserted the measures imposed on HTI members must remain proportinate and prudent. 

"I don't think it's proportional and unwise if civil servants or lecturers who was HTI followers were asked to withdraw from HTI or resign from their job," Mahfud told Republika.co.id, on Wednesday (July 26).

Mahfud heard from the widely spread news, the threat come from Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo and Minister Research, Technology and Higher Education M. Nasir. 

He explained HTI has been officially dissolved by the government. "The organization is no longer exist, therefore from where those people should withdrawn themself?

Furthermore, Mahfud said HTI members could not be assesed as people who has been involved in forbidden organization. According to legal aspect, they have joined the organization before it was banned. 

"They could not be considered to have violate the law unless they broke the law that already exist at that time," he remarked.

Mahfud saw many people joined HTI without knowing the organization's goal. They attended HTI event assuming it was da'wah organization or majelis taklim. 

"So this is all should be sorted out as they are our countrymen too. They should be embraced to live as citizen based on Pancasila as well. If we cornered and hostile them, they could get into new radical group," Mahfud said.

Mahfud called on the people to stop terrorizing former members of HTI. "Better live in harmony as fellow Indonesian," he said.
