REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Political observer Chusnul Mar'iyah considered the government tried to cornered its political opponent through articles in Election Law.

Furthermore, she described the application of 20 percent presidential threshold equals to assasination of political opponents.

Chusnul assessed such requirement eliminate the chance for parties outside the government coalition to promote their own candidates for next presidential election.

"Presidential threshold is a proof of a party's interest or political power that is essensially anti-competition," she said when contacted by Republika.co.id, on Tuesday (July 25) night.

The absence of competition, she added, is harming democracy. "Therefore, the 20 percent presidential threshold is against and violates Constitution," Chusnul reiterated.

The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) passed the General Election Bill into law late on Thursday (July 20) night with four political party factions walked out of the plenary meeting.
