REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has urged the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and Indonesian Police (Polri) to maintain solidity and abolish sectoral ego for guarding the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

"Always stand with the people to know what they need and what they want," the head of state said while leading a ceremony to install 729 military and police officers at the Merdeka Palace, here, Tuesday.

He reminded the young officers that future challenges in protecting the country are bigger and multidimensional.

The president also cited several potential threats, such as the diminishing influence of the values of the Pancasila state ideology, anarchism, terrorism, drug abuse, smuggling, and illegal trade.

Indonesia is also affected directly and indirectly by international problems, such as ISIS, foreign terrorists, competition for energy reserves, arms race, regional conflicts, and war, according to Jokowi.

He also called on the TNI and Polri to improve their professionalism in offering public services by taking advantage of the progress in technology.

"I urge all young officers to carry out their tasks, mandates, and services professionally, proportionally, and in accordance with the procedures, regulations, and professional code of ethics," he noted.
