REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Attorney General HM Prasetyo said the present law on terrorism is not effective and needs revision to prevent more terror attacks.

Calls for revision of the law on terrorism are getting louder followed suicide bombing at Kampung Melayu in Jakarta on Wednesday evening.

"This confirmed that the present law on terrorism is not adequate that it needs revision," Prasetyo said here on Friday, adding currently people are too free to commit various kinds of terrorism.

He said an effective legal basis is needed to prevent terrorism. "We should not act after a bomb exploded, but we should prevent the bombs from exploding," he added.

He cited people are free to hold military training as there is no law against military training by civilians, what is the purpose of the training other than a preparation for terrorism.

"Now many Indonesians have gone abroad to join terrorists, but we could not do anything against them," he said.

Therefore, the law should be revised to allow police to prevent and at the same time to take the necessary action.

The Wednesday's attack left five people killed including three police officers and two civilians believed to be the perpetrators of the suicide bombing. There are 11 other people including police officers were injured.
