GNPF MUI to hold 55 rally on Friday

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of National Movement to Safeguard Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI)'s fatwa, cleric Bachtiar Nasir, said his team had sent notification letter of 55 rally to Jakarta Metro Police on Tuesday. 

Bachtiar said the 55 rally will be staged on Friday, May 5, to support the judges independency in making decision of blasphemy case with Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok as the defendant. He said the rally will be started with congregational prayer at Istiqlal mosque continued with a long march to Supreme Court office. 

"If the Supreme Court is willing to accept us, we will have discussion. After that, the rally is finish," he said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Bachtiar said the mass will accept gracefully when the Supreme Court did not accept their coming. "As what we've showed in front of the Presidential Palace, we did not become anarchist. We will obey the rule that the demonstration must not be hold over 18.00 p.m.," he said. 

Furthermore, Bachtiar explained GNPF MUI did not have any other intention except to seek justice in Ahok's case. The movement has no intention to topple the government. "We only wanted the Supreme Court to be fair, independent and free from any pressure in making the verdict against Ahok," he reiterated.

According to Bachtiar, the Head of MUI's Advisory Board Din Syamsudin could not come to thw press conference. But, he showed his support to the rally. 

"I support the upcoming rally on May 5. May this became our struggle (jihad)," said Bachtiar reading Din's statement via Whatsapp message. 

He said some Indonesian figures namely Arifin Ilham, Abdullah Gymnastiar, and some others also supported this action.
