REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM -- The government of Riau Islands' provincial city of Batam will deploy at least 600 residents and waste workers to clean up garbage scattered in the waters around Tanjungriau in commemoration of National Waste Care Day.

Head of the Batam's Environment Affairs Office, Dendi Purnomo said here on Friday that the government is deliberately concentrating the activity of Waste Care Day in Tanjunggriau, because plastic waste has been accumulating in the densely populated fishermen resettlement area. "Tanjungriau has been chosen because it is close to the beach," he pointed out.

According to him, the city government will also declare a ban on trash throwing in the ocean.
