Ministry initiates Council of National Harmony to prevent intolerance

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TASIKMALAYA -- The Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security (Kemenkopolhukam) has initiated the establishment of the Council of National Harmony to prevent intolerance and religion conflict.

Assistant Deputy Coordinator of National Vigilance of the Kemenkopolhukam Brigadier General Wawan Kustiawan said in order to handle conflict, mediation effort should be pursued. Wawan felt majority of conflicts in fact were resolved legally. However, through the Council of National Harmony should be able to initiate discussion without the need to take firm action.

"Council of national harmony can resolve the conflict via the mediation. If usually conflict resolved legally but before enter legal domain, mediation effort namely FKUB (Forum for Religious Harmony) try to solve the problem. If it failed, the case could enter the law domain," he told Focus Group Discussin about intolerance in the Tasik Regency, on Thursday (March 16).

National Council of Harmony was hoped to become one of the national strategy to prevent intolerance. In addition, several government ministries and non-governmental organizations (NGO) arranged the programs. He also asked the head of the areas to maintain the stability of the region through strengthening religious harmony.

"Ministry of home affairs and ministry of religious affairs will issue joint regulation about duty of local leaders in maintain religious communities and the establishment of houses of worship. With this guidance, we will be able to create harmony of the nation in the context of religion," Wawan said.
