REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Imam Nahrawi has appreciated the organizers of the simultaneous regional head elections in 101 regions across the country that did not involve sport events for political campaigns. "Earlier in every political campaign, including the local elections, sport activities were normally put into one of political consolidation activities," the minister stated on the sidelines of gathering with journalists here on Wednesday.

Imam went on to say that the sport activities used by politicians as a means of campaigns are not in line with the values of the sports to encourage friendship and brotherhood. "Sports is a means of unifying the nation. If there is achievement of our sports, we also have pride and dignity as a nation, especially in the international championships," the minister pointed out.

On the occasion, the minister urged all of the Indonesian youth to continue strengthening the national solidarity, even though every youth has different regional head candidates.

The elections took place in seven provinces to elect governors and deputy governors, in 76 districts to elect district heads and deputy district heads, and in 18 municipalities to elect mayors and deputy mayors.

According to the General Election Commission (KPU), a total of 41.2 million people across the country were registered in the final voters list. Thus, under the 77.5 percent participant level target set by the KPU, at least 31.9 million of voters took part in the elections.
