Senior journalist Herawati Diah passes away

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Senior journalist Herawati Diah (99 years) passed away on Friday (30/9). The deceased died at the Medistra Hospital, South Jakarta.

Herawati was the wife of the press figures, B.M. Diah. Herawati, was born in the Belitung Islands on April 3, 1917. She involved in the establishment of several mass media such as Merdeka Daily News.

Herawati and her husband also founded The Indonesian Observer as Indonesia’s first english newspaper. The newspaper is published and distributed for the first time in the Asian-African Conference in Bandung, West Java, 1955.

People respected her. She also encouraged the next generation to fighting.

Herawati known as patient, wise, supporting, and cheerful.

In 1998 during the reform era, Hera founded the Perempuan Sadar Pemilu (GPSP), a movement to raise Indonesian women's level of awareness on matters related to general elections.

Then GPSP turned into Swara Women Empowerment Movement (GPSP).
