Two pair of candidates challange the incumbent

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta General Election Commission (KPUD) has closed registration of next year's Jakarta gubernatorial election on Friday (23/9) night.

Three pairs of candidates officially registered to run in the election. The first pair of candidates are incumbent, Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama-Djarot Saiful. They were appointed by the National Democratic Party (Nasdem), the People's Conscience Party (Hanura), the Golkar Party, and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).

The second and third pair of candidates are coming from kinship coalition. The coalition has broken into two, becoming Cikeas and Kertanegara coalition. The name was taken from their basecamp at the Democratic Party chairman Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) chairman Prabowo Subianto.

Cikeas coalition formed by four parties, the Democratic Party, the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP) and the National Awakening Party (PKB). They backs Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni.

Meanwhile, Kertanegara coalition decided to run with Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno. The Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) and the Prosperous Justice Party are members of this coalition.

Jakarta KPUD chairman, Sumarno said, after the registration of three pairs of candidates, the registration period has been closed. Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga-Uno, is the last pair that registered on a Friday night.

"So, officially registration for gubernaorial election has been closed. There are three pairs who register as candidates for Jakarta gubernatorial election in 2017 and we consider their administration are complete," Sumarno said in the Jakarta KPUD office on Friday (9/23) night.

Today (24/9), all candidates are schedulled to undergo health check up at Mintohardjo Navy Hospital, Central Jakarta. Tomorrow, (25/9), they will perform psychological test and drug test. "We involve 180 medical and psychological experts to check physical, psycological, and drug test," Sumarno said.
