REPUBLIKA.CO.ID -- Russia is awaiting the Indonesian government to make preparations to build technological apparatuses to operate a nuclear power plant, Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Mikhail Galuzin said.

"We have several times put forth a proposal to cooperate in setting up a nuclear power plant. We also have often familiarized the Indonesian public with the benefit of nuclear power. Whenever Indonesia is ready, we will help it," he said after holding a dialogue with journalists at his residence in South Jakarta on Wednesday (31/8).

The Indonesian government is yet to give a green light to the development of a nuclear power plant, a fact hampering the proposed cooperation.

"Many countries, including Japan and China, have cooperated with us (in developing a nuclear power plant) and they have had no problem with it," he added.

Indonesia is fortunate that it is endowed with water, wind, and steam energy to operate power plants, he reminded.

If necessary, Russia will assist Indonesia in the construction of a nuclear power plant, including nuclear filling for security reasons, he said.

The envoy further praised the Indonesian National Nuclear Energy Agency (Batan) for the steps it is taking to prepare for research on the issue of developing a nuclear power plant.
