REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG  --  American Deputy Ambassador for Indonesia Brian McFeeters said his country has been consistently supporting environment management programs being implemented in Indonesia.

"Essentially, the programs that have been implemented in Indonesia are similar to what we have in the US, and it is merely a matter of synchronizing our perceptions," said McFeeters after he spoke at a seminar in Andalas University in Padang.

He further explained that the endorsement is in the form of partnerships and events to disseminate information about effective environment management measures.

Through the consulate and organizations including USAID, the US has been consistently involved in environment preservation, he observed.

For example, the US government helped in the education and technology sector in the integrated waste handling program or tree planting.

Through USAID, the embassy also held programs that strengthen the educational, social and cultural sector as supporting factors in managing the environment.

"Dissemination of the message and ways of recycling waste can motivate people to utilize their reusable waste," he added.

He informed that his office has adopted a recycling technology learnt from the US, and the results are visible. The US also often initiated environmental programs including biodiversity conservation.

Environment issues are currently a priority for the US government, which is why they continue to take measures that deal with these subject matters including organizing events for dissemination of information and educating people about the environment.

Meanwhile, an Andalas University student, Anita, hoped that the US' program in West Sumatra, including the Pacific Partnership, can boost the advancement of environmental management, as well as disaster mitigation in the region.

The US' broad experience in managing the environment and handling disasters can help the local government in coming up with innovations in these issues, she observed.
