REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUSA DUA -- The thirtd congress of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions (AACC) will be opened by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in Nusa Dua, Bali on Thursday.
The chief of the Constitutional Court, Arief Hidayat, had asked the president during a meeting in June to officially open the congress.
The aim of the congress is to promote the development of democracy, laws and constitutional rights in Asia through exchange of information and experiences regarding constitutional issues. AACC will also strive for deepening cooperation and friendship among constitutional institutions across Asia.
The congress in Bali is the third being held by the association with 16 member countries of Asia, including Indonesia, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the Philippines, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, South Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Russia, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar.
However, only 14 countries are attending the meeting in Bali on Thursday as Pakistan and Uzbekistan will not be present. The first congress of the association was held in South Korea in May 2012 while the second was held in Turkey in April 2014.
The third congress of AACC in Bali from August 9 to 13 is being held under the theme of Advancement and Protection of Citizens' Constitutional Rights.
