Surabaya Mayor inaugurates public space

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini (Risma) has inaugurated the public space named cultural hall (Balai Budaya) Cak Markeso in Ketandan Village, Genteng subdistrict, Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday (27/7).

Risma said existence of Ketandan which besieged with hotels and shopping malls is crucial to revive the city center.

"Therefore, this village is located in the heart of Surabaya, live for 24 hours because its citizens actively interact. Unlike the shopping area stop its operation when at 10:00 p.m," Risma said when inaugurating Balai Budaya Cak Markeso with delegations of the Third Session Preparatory Committee.

Balai Budaya is located in the middle of these settlements will be connecting for Ketandan residents to interact and discuss all matters related to their neighborhood.

According to Risma, local residents who have been maintaining the life of the town for 24 hours because the stores has been closed since 10:00 p.m.

"Therefore, I did my best to keep this village, because the history of Surabaya was formed from the villages," she said.

Development of traditional joglo which functioned as pavilion is result of cooperation between United Cities Local Government Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC), UN Habitat and the Surabaya City Administration.

Moreover, she continued, the construction of public spaces is the support of UCLG ASPAC to the Surabaya City Administration in realizing the construction of Surabaya become sustainable growing city.
