4.6-magnitude quake jolts Alor

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale shook Alor district in the eastern Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara, early Sunday.

The earthquake which struck at 01.35 a.m. local time was centered 08.47 degrees southern latitude and 124.19 degrees eastern longitude or 44 km southwest of Alor at a depth of 10 km, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Office in Kupang, capital of East Nusa Tenggara province, said.

The tremor was felt by the local people at III-IV on the modified mercalli intensity scale, the office said.

The office also said an earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale also shook Sumba Barat Daya district at 10.49 a.m. on Sunday.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 09.39 degrees southern latitude and 118.84 degrees eastern longitude or 37 northwest of Sumba Barat Daya at a depth of 34 km, it said.

There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale is considered moderate and capable of causing damage.

Indonesia is one of the countries which are prone to earthquakes.
