REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,MUNTOK -- A total of three endemic species in West Bangka, Bangka Belitung province, under threat from various human activities .
"Three of these species consist of one type of animal pangolin (Manis javanica) and two plants, namely Keruing Elephant (Dipterocarpus grandiflorus blanco ) and Damar (Hopea mengarawan Miq)," said researcher of PT Ekologika Consultants July Supriya in Muntok Friday (27/5).
Supriadi has been conducting research over the last year in that area to determine High Conservation Value (HCV) in six categories. "In the HCV 1.2 we examine special ecosystem types concerning endangered species and finding the facts," he said.
According to him, the three species could become extinct if the main threat factors is not immediately taken into consideration, such as; land clearing for roads and settlements, illegal mining, fire, clearing land for gardening, illegal logging, and the capture of wildlife. He hoped the government could soon take an immediate action into maintaining its natural resources in the area.
“Increasing awareness of social responsibilities to improve the understanding of the community to care and protect these species, in the hope to stop poaching and logging of two types of plants that are endangered," he said.
In addition, he said, the government and the public also need to enrich plant species by increasing the plantation of the two endangered plants.
