REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia should immediately follow up on the Sustainable Development Goals program (SDGs), which is a continuation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) launched by the United Nations (UN).

"The SDGs should be followed up," Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare and Poverty Alleviation (1997-1998) Prof. Dr. Haryono Suyono said here on Wednesday.

Haryono made the statement in the context of the implementation of the MDGs program coming to an end, which is to be followed by SDGs for the next 15 years. This is in accordance with the decision of the UN General Assembly in New York taken on September 26, 2015.

According to him, over the last 15 years, the governments and communities around the world have implemented a concept of development which was established in 2000 by the UN as part of its MDGs.

MDGs were focused on the fight against poverty and hunger, as well as health, education, gender equality and environmental sustainability issues.

However, due to various reasons, the success in implementing the MDGs was very varied. Many countries can achieve the MDGs' targets, but others, including Indonesia, faced problems in achieving the target as 2015 ended.

However, the MDG program has encouraged many countries to continue work on the new targets, called SDGs. The program was established at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in New York on September 26, 2015.

Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla asserted at the conference that Indonesia was fully committed to adopt the SDGs.

He added that the Indonesian government's program was in line with the SDGs and this international program has been incorporated into the national program.
