REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- Electric ships from Turkey arrived in the Tenau port of Kupang on Saturday night carrying a 60 megawatt gas fired power plant.

Bad weather delayed the The Karadeniz Powership Zeynep Sultan from landing on Saturday morning, General Manager of the regional office of the state power utility PT PLN Richard Safkaur said here.

The Karadeniz Powership Zeynep Sultan is one of four such ships leased by the government from Turkey for five years to cope with crisis in power supply in a number of regions in the country.

Kupang has been beset by crisis in power supply over the past several years.

"Until December, 2015 , the government has not succeeded in coping with shortage in power supply in Kupang even if after the operation of a steam powered electric station with a capacity of 2 x 16.5 MW," Richard said.

Currently the turbine of the Bolok steam powered electric plant (PLTU) failed that PLN could not supply enough power in Kupang.

Richard said Kupang would badly need power especially ahead of Christmas and New Year.

Kupang has suffered from the inconvenience of frequent blackouts over the past three weeks.

The arrival of the Karadeniz Powership Zeynep Sultan would help in overcoming crisis in power supply in Kupang.
