REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is ready to help develop Indonesia into a global maritime axis, the agency's chief, Adi Eka Sakya stated.

To this end, the agency has organized the second workshop on November 24-26 to discuss a plan to implement the Years of the Maritime Continent (YMC) 2017-2019, he noted here on Wednesday.

The first workshop was held in Singapore. During the second workshop, the participants will discuss the plans to implement the YMC by presenting research proposals and cooperation.

He hoped that the implementation of the YMC activities would increase the understanding of weather forecast and the impact of climate change.

The workshop is being attended by 27 participants from 10 countries: Indonesia, the United States, Japan, China, Ukraine, Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, Germany, and Britain.

Indonesia, as a maritime nation, is the world's largest archipelago that lies along the equator and enjoys a strategic position between the Asian and Australian continents, and the Indian and Pacific oceans.

Based on its location, Indonesia influences the weather in both the northern and southern parts of the Earth.
