Indonesia asked to help to overcome Colombian conflict

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANILA -- The Colombian Government has asked the Indonesian government to help creating peace in the country. For decades, Colombia faced conflict from the separatist movement that led hundreds of people died.

"(With Colombia) we talked about peace. They want to learn from Indonesia how  to overcome conflict in Aceh," said Vice President Jusuf Kalla, after conducting a bilateral meeting with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos in Manila, Philippines, Wednesday (18/11).

He said, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Hamid Alawuddin who had been a negotiator team of Aceh conflict has visited Colombia to share the experience of Indonesia in creating peace. According to Kalla, the Colombian government's peace team would also visit Indonesia to study the handling of conflict.

Kalla said that Colombia's conflict was lasted longer than the conflicts that have occurred in Indonesia. Unfortunately, the conflict was lasted about 50 years until now.

"We are ready if asked to become a peacemaker in the conflict in Colombia," he claimed.

To note, the FARC or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia has been fighting the Colombian government since the mid-1960s. The conflict has killed more than 200 thousand people.

The rebel groups was demanding reforms in various places in Colombia. Due to the action, the FARC was classified as a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union. Negotiations between the Colombian government and the FARC was known to have been in progress since 2012.
