REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government is ready to build power plants with a capacity of 35 thousand megawatts (MW). It was because future electricity needs would increase.

Deputy Head of Nuclear Science and Technology Applications, National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN), Ferhat Aziz, said target of 35 thousand MW power plant is very logical. Because, the actual minimal needs electricity to be supplied are 115 thousand MW.

"That's why 35 thousand MW of electricity is indeed a rational target. But unfortunately BATAN cannot contribute to the project by 2019," said Ferhat, Thursday (12/11).

BATAN, he added, could not come to provide 35 thousand MW of electricity, because building a nuclear power plant would take a very long time. Whereas, the government has targeted the project within the next few years.

"The long duration of construction of nuclear power plants because of difficulty in fulfilling the safety requirements," he continued.

Study for nuclear power plant construction site took three years. While, the power plant construction took seven years.

"I received information that the United Arab Emirates built a nuclear power plant for eight years. Even in Finland, the construction could be a dozen years," he said.

One of weak points of nuclear, he explained, the construction of nuclear power plants took between 7 to 10 years. So that BATAN could not contribute to the development target of 35 thousand MW power plant in 2019.
