Police arrest 20 persons relating to Aceh Singkil conflict

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Police chief General Badrodin Haiti has said that 20 persons have been arrested relating to communal conflict which happened in Aceh Singkil District, Aceh Province, Tuesday.

"Some 20 persons have been nabbed, and (police) have conducted investigation to see whether or not all the 20 persons are involved," the police chief said here on Tuesday night.

The conflict left one person died and four injured including a military member.

According to the police chief, the communal conflict starting from the permit problem issue of churches, where some residents urged the local government to dismantle dozens of churches that do not have permission.

Earlier, Vice President Jusuf Kalla expressed the hope that the communal conflict, which happened in Aceh Singkil District, Aceh Province, would be resolved in a fair manner.

"Yes, all problems involving racial intolerance should be solved properly and fairly, in accordance with the rules so that such problems do not arise again," the Vice President said here on Tuesday.

A communal conflict happened Tuesday noon in Kuta Lerangan village, Simpang Kanan sub-district, Aceh Singkil District, police said.

According to the local police, the conflict occurred when a group of people, who allegedly wanted to demolish a house being used illegally for worship, were opposed by local residents.

The Vice President said he had contacted Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah regarding this case.

Kalla believed that the communal incident happened due to misunderstanding.

The Vice President also hoped that the Aceh provincial government can seek solutions to the case.
