REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ministry of Labour declared that Indonesia is ready for ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which will begin in late 2015. AEC was considered to have positive impacts for Indonesia, including providing opportunities for the expansion of markets for products and services in Indonesia.

"AEC also provides employment for skilled labor in Indonesia," said Head of Sub Directorate of Standard Competency Development, Ministry of Labor, Muchtar Azis, in Bogor, Thursday (8/10).

Readiness of Indonesia was supported by 56.6 percent of Indonesia's population which belongs to middle class. It brought Indonesia as the country with the largest economy in ASEAN and as the only member of the G20 in ASEAN.

"Indonesia was ranked 38th of 148 countries in global competitiveness index. Moreover, 60 percent of Indonesia's population is youth, so that demographic dividend can be enjoyed in 2020 and 2030," said Muchtar.

However, he added, Indonesia still needs more skilled labors. Because, according to official data of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in May 2015, 75.78 million of Indonesian workers have low education.

Muchtar said that Ministry of Labor has a program to improve the quality of human resources through job training. The program is in accordance with Law No.13 of 2003 About Employment.

"Target of working age in job training program is 15 to 64 years old," he added.

Skilled labor was not only required to meet the AEC, but also to make Indonesian people work productively. So that Indonesian workers could increase the added value for the company and improve the welfare of the family.
