REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW DELHI -- A massive violence erupted in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur late Monday evening, with a mob burning down the houses of a minister and four other lawmakers of the state over the issue of inner line permit, a senior police official said.

"A huge mob went on a rampage around 6:30 p.m. (local time) in the state's Churachandpur town. The violence is still going on as protesters are preventing the cops and the fire brigade to douse the flames that have engulfed the house of the state's Health Minister and four other lawmakers," he said.

Local TV channels reported that the protesters have being opposed to the passing of three bills in the state assembly, which seek to regulate the entry of outsiders into the state through a permit system called the inner line permit.

A huge contingent of security forces has been dispatched to the area to control the violence, the official said.
