REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANGERANG SELATAN -- Women play a crucial role in determining the quality of their family and children, according to President Joko Widodo.

"Family development cannot be separated from women's role, as has been shown by the teams behind the Family Welfare Empowerment program in regions. Women have performed well in integrated health service posts, family planning and family welfare programs," he said at the commemoration of National Family Day in Serpong in Tangerang Selatan on Saturday.

The head of state added that family is one of the important pillars for the development of a nation and state. A good family will produce good human resources, which will have an impact on various sectors.

"We need to prioritize the development of human resources. We need to ensure that Indonesian families have good quality," he remarked.

"The government puts family at the vanguard of social and public welfare improvement," he emphasized.

"Everything stems from a family. We are aware that the obstacles families face will become more challenging. We will get a demographic bonus from the 2020 to 2030 period, with the working age group in 2020 reaching 70 percent and the remaining 30 percent comprising people below the age of 15 and above 60," he explained.

"This is a boon if we can take advantage of it. It can boost development, which will in turn improve public welfare. However, it could be detrimental if the quality of the skills of Indonesian people is not taken care of," Jokowi cautioned.

The commemoration was attended by First Lady Iriana, Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, the coordinating minister for human development and culture, acting governor of Banten Rano Karno, Mayor of Tangerang Selatan Airin Rachmi Diany, and other officials.
