REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- Merauke Airport in Papua province has resumed operations, after being shut down since Friday evening following the eruption of Mount Manam in Papua New Guinea.
Head of the Merauke Airport Management Asri Santoso said here on Saturday that the airport's activities were back to normal and that a Garuda airplane landed here at 1:45 p.m., followed by an airplane of Lion at 2:20 p.m. local time.
The local airport was shut down at 10 p.m. on Friday after receiving reports that volcanic ashes spewed by Mount Manam were heading in the westward direction. A number of flights were either delayed or cancelled due to the temporary closure of the airport.
Mount Manam is one of Papua New Guinea's most active volcanoes.
