REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The construction of more dams in some regions is necessary to cope with the drought that is currently affecting Indonesia, Vice President Jusuf M. Kalla stated.

There should no delay in constructing and filling up the dams with water, the vice president noted here on Wednesday, commenting on the news regarding the delay in filling water in the new Jatigede dam located in Sumedang District, West Java.

On July 27, West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan remarked that the Jatigede dam is a central government project, and the government plans to fill the dam with water in August.

The Jatigede dam is the second-largest after the Jatiluhur dam.

"It will take seven months, or 219 days to fill the dam with water," Director General for Water Resources of the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry Mudjiadi noted recently.

The new dam is expected to irrigate 90 thousand hectares of rice fields.

The dam, with a water resource capacity of 3.5 cubic meters per second, can supply water to Sumedang, Majalengka, and up to Cirebon.

The new dam will be able to generate up to 110 megawatts of electricity and will also help to control flooding in an area measuring 14 thousand hectares apart from having the potential to become a tourist attraction.
