REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JEMBER -- The volcanic ash spewed by Mount Raung located across the districts of Jember, Bondowoso, and Banyuwangi in East Java has disrupted school activities in Jember area.

The teachers in the Public Junior High School III of Silo Sub-district, Jember, on Monday, distributed masks to the students before Monday's ceremonial event held in the school field due to the volcanic ash rain.

"We distributed masks to the students during the first day of the school's activity due to the volcanic ash raining down on Silo Sub-district," Headmaster of the Public Junior High School III Edy Guntoro stated here.

According to Edy, the volcanic ash can affect human health, and thus, the students and teachers should wear masks during outdoor activities.

"The students should restrict outdoor activities due to the thick volcanic ash raining down for several days on the slopes of Mount Raung," Edy explained.

The school management and students also conducted cleaning activities in their classes, which had become dirty due to the volcanic ash.

Jesika Rahmasari, one of the students, remarked that the volcanic ash can affect the health of the students, particularly when they held outdoor activities such as extracurricular and sports activities.

"The students should restrict their outdoor activities and wear masks when they come to school. It is very uncomfortable," Jesika said.

Jember Education Service Chief Bambang Hariono has appealed to all schools to conduct regular study activities despite the volcanic ash pouring down on the area.

"It is better for the teachers and students to wear masks. I hope the volcanic ash do not affect study activities," Bambang added.
