REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A researcher from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Otto Scharmer said that in the current age, education must include the three aspects of free access, empowerment, and transformation.
"Education today should entail the three characteristics of free access, empowerment, and transformation," Scharmer stated here on Wednesday.
In February 2013, MIT had launched a global network known as U-Lab with regional hubs.
Each hub seeks to integrate three types of knowledge---technical knowledge, practical knowledge and knowledge of self-transformation. They can serve to improve students' understanding of their own selves and their future, Scharmer affirmed.
The network has 28,000 participants from 190 countries and comprises 350 cross-social and cultural hubs.
According to Scharmer, present studies should also contain the concept of learning to move from classroom culture to the real world and the power of interpretation.
"The new model of education today is a challenge. I do not know the condition of education in Indonesia, but in the United States, there are a lot of problems," he noted.
Scharmer mentioned that in the United States, education being too expensive, outdated, and difficult to access were issues.
The way out of these problems is 21st century learning, he remarked.
