REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia held an international training on disaster risk mitigation in Aceh to commemorate the ten years since the devastating tsunami struck the province.

The training, which began on May 25, will be held till June 4 by the Technical Cooperation Directorate of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Tsunami and Disaster Risk Mitigation Center (TDRMC) of Syah Kuala University, and the USAID Indonesia.

According to a press release received by Antara here on Thursday, the joint training is being held as a form of support to Indonesia, which chaired the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) for 2015-2017.

Director General of Public Diplomacy and Information of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Esti Andayani said that the training was meant for member states of the IORA and other countries in South America and the Caribbean.

"Although we still have several challenges to overcome, countries in disaster-prone regions, including Indonesia, members of the IORA, South American nations and the Caribbean Islands, should help each other face future challenges," Andayani emphasized.

She added that knowledge and experiences should be shared in the training to ensure that countries prone to natural disasters can anticipate and respond better to disasters in their regions.

The training will be followed by 12 participants from seven countries, including Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar and Indonesia.

The participants will be trained for 10 days on ways to face potential risks in coastal areas, disaster mitigation, improving people's resilience and disaster mapping.

During the workshop, they will also visit several places in Aceh that were hit by the tsunami in 2004.

"Through the workshop of strengthening disaster risk management, Indonesia has played an active role in southern countries. The training is also aimed at exploring further cooperation potential and sharing experiences in disaster mitigation," Andayani noted.
