REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) inked a cooperation agreement on the implementation of a six-week joint basic education program for military and police cadets.

The joint basic education for military and police cadets is expected to help build better relations between military and police officers, TNI Chief General Moeldoko remarked after attending the opening ceremony of the leadership meeting of the TNI and Polri, here, Tuesday (3/3).

When the ties between the personnel of the two institutions are strong, there will be greater synergy in carrying out their on-field tasks, he emphasized.

The joint education program is also expected to effectively reduce possible conflicts between them in the future, he stated.

"So far, joint exercises are only carried out for high-ranking officers of the two institutions and not for those at the lower levels. Therefore, conflicts between the TNI and Polri officers often occur," he noted.

The joint basic education program will be carried out starting this year in Magelang, Central Java.

Among those present at the event were President Joko Widodo as the key speaker, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno, Deputy Police Chief Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti, Chief of Staff of the Navy Admiral Ade Supandi, Chief of Staff of the Army Gator Nurmantyo, and Chief of Staff of the Air Force Marshal Agus Supriyatna.

Earlier, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called on the TNI and Polri to focus their efforts to prevent terrorism.

"In dealing with terrorism, prioritize prevention, not to handle it only after it happens," Jokowi informed the press after issuing directives during the leadership meeting of the TNI and Polri.

Preventive efforts need to be backed by on-field data and information collected by the intelligence agency, he noted.

Terrorism still poses a threat not only to Indonesia but also to other countries. He mentioned the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) as an eminent terror threat.

Jokowi also emphasized that security and stability is crucial to help achieve the targets of economic growth and infrastructure development.
