REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATI-BATI -- Floods submerged 1,159 houses in the villages of Benua Raya and Bati-Bati sub-district in Tanah Laut district, South Kalimantan province, forcing residents to evacuate to higher ground.
"A number of people moved to their relatives' homes," head of Banua Raya village, Asnan, said here on Thursday.
In Benua Raya, 681 families comprising 2,550 people were affected by floods.
Even though medical assistance has been provided to flood victims, they are still awaiting relief aid such as food, he pointed out.
Furthermore, head of Bati-Bati village, Amrullah, revealed that some 478 houses were flooded in his village.
Some parts of Tanah Laut district experience floods annually, despite several canals having been constructed to drain floodwaters to Kurau River, which empties into the Java Sea.
It was reported earlier that floods had hit some districts in South Kalimantan province and affected more than eight thousand families.
"We have received some information. Five districts were inundated due to incessant heavy rains in the province over the last few days," Achmadi, who is from the social affairs office of South Kalimantan, affirmed in Banjarmasin on Tuesday.
The flood-hit districts include Banjar, Tanah Laut, Barito Kuala, Balangan, and Central Hulu Sungai.
Since early February, some 8,348 families across South Kalimantan province have been affected by floods.
