REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta authorities have prioritized their flood-handling efforts in eight areas considered prone to flooding, stated Head of the Jakarta Water Management Office Agus Priyono.

The eight areas were located around the three water flows, notably, western, central, and eastern, he remarked.

The flood-prone areas located in proximity to the western water flow include those in the University of Trisakti, which is in front of the University of Tarumanegara in Grogol, and Greenville, he said.

Furthermore, Jelambar area is also prone to floods as it is a basin area surrounded by the Kali Sekretaris, Kali Angke and Kali Grogol rivers.

With regard to the central water flow, the areas given priority are Mampang, Kebon Baru, and Bidara Cina. The Jakarta administration will build several absorption wells in Mampang.

In order to handle the floods in the eastern water flow, the local authorities will prioritize West Kelapa Gading and Cawang. To tackle the floods in West Kelapa Gading area, three water pumps will be installed respectively in Kali Betik canal, Artha Gading, and on Jalan Boulevard Barat.

Earlier, Priyono noted that the authorities in Jakarta have planned to acquire more water pumps and strengthen the dykes to handle the floods that frequently wreak havoc in the capital city.

"Several infrastructure projects and facilities are currently under construction," Head of the Jakarta Water Management Department Agus Priyono stated here on Thursday.

The Jakarta administration is accelerating its efforts to increase the height of its sea dykes and to install more water pumps in accordance with the existing master plan on flood handling.

"In downstream areas, we plan to install six big water pumps in river estuaries. These include the Kamal Pump, Angke Pump, Marina Pump, Karang Pump, Sentiong Pump, and Sunter Hilir Pump," Priyono affirmed.

The installation of the pumps will commence this year and is expected to be completed within two or three years.

"The water pumps are expected to mitigate the tidal floods that frequently hit the northern coastal areas in Jakarta," he stated.

Furthermore, several dykes must also be elevated to optimize efforts to prevent floods, he added.
