REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MUARA TEWEH -- The floodwaters that have affected North Barito District in Central Kalimantan Province over the past two days are spreading to wider areas as the Barito River is overflowing its banks.
"The floodwaters have risen, thereby preventing motorbikes and cars from plying on the flooded roads," Muara Teweh resident Rizali Hadi noted here on Tuesday.
Merak and Imam Bonjol roads are submerged under floodwaters reaching heights between one and 1.5 meters.
Dahlia, Sengaji, Pangeran Antasari, Perwira, and Panglima Batur roads were flooded with nearly half-meter deep waters.
Hundreds of houses were flooded in six out of North Barito's nine sub-districts, Head of the North Barito Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) stated.
Floodwaters reaching heights between one and two meters have affected Teweh Tengah, Teweh Selatan, Lahei Barat, Lahei, Teweh Baru, and Montallat sub-districts.
"The local authorities have declared a flood emergency status in these areas," he added.
Several provinces are currently experiencing flooding and landslides, with the rainy season peaking between January and February.
In Gresik, East Java Province, three villagers were washed away and killed by the floods that recently hit Kajar and Gadding Watu hamlets, Menganti Sub-district.
Jakarta has also been flooded since Sunday following incessant heavy rains.
In South Kalimantan province, floods have affected more than eight thousand families.
