Flood inundates Muara Teweh in North Barito

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MUARA TEWEH -- The overflowing Barito river has inundated Muara Teweh in North Barito district, Central Kalimantan province, following incessant heavy rains for the last few days.

"A number of roads and residential areas are submerged in floodwaters," a resident of Muara Teweh, Syarbani, said here on Monday.

Floodwaters, which reached heights of between 15 centimeters and 40 centimeters, are expected to rise further because the rainfall has not stopped, he added.

Currently, several provinces are experiencing flooding and landslides, with the rainy season reaching its peak in February.

In Jakarta, incessant downpours triggered floods in at least 49 locations on Monday, according to the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD).

"The heavy rainfall, which began Sunday evening and continued till this morning, inundated 49 locations throughout Jakarta," Bambang Suryaputra of the BPBD stated.

Of the 49 flood-affected locations, 22 are in Central Jakarta. They include Jalan MH Thamrin, Cempaka Baru, Ahmad Yani, Kwitang Raya,Majapahit, Budi Kemuliaan, Percetakan Negara, Jalan Cempaka Putih Tengah, and Senen Raya, among several other places.

In addition, three villagers in East Java province were dragged by and drowned in floods that hit Kajar and Gadding Watu hamlets in Menganti sub-district, Gresik district, recently.

Head of the Regional Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Abu Hasan, noted on Saturday that the floods were triggered by torrential rains experienced in the areas.
