REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta Police asserted that they did not cooperate with the Jakarta administration to deploy snipers to anticipate crimes.

"So far, we have no cooperation with the Jakarta Provincial Administration regarding (deployment of) snipers," Senior Commissioner Martinus Sitompul, a spokesman of the Jakarta Police, stated here, on Thursday.

Snipers are usually deployed to secure VVIPs and anticipate major crimes, he noted.

The deployment of snipers must adhere to certain mechanisms and must be supported by strong evidence of serious crime threats, he emphasized.

"We cannot carelessly deploy snipers because we prioritize preventive measures," Sitompul stated.

Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, alias Ahok, earlier revealed that he had given funds to the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and Police to optimize security measures in the capital city.

"So, along Jakarta's roads, if there is an accident, robbery, or theft, we can chase the robbers, those who steal motorcycles, where they come from and go. We are prepared. We have given the money to buy 326 units (of motorcycles). The latest ones, 250 cc are for snipers," Ahok was quoted as saying by MetroTV News.com on Thursday (Jan. 29).

The Jakarta administration also planned to install 500 CCTV cameras in every corner of the city, in February 2015.
