REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Bambang Widjojanto said he was considering resigning from the KPK, after being named as a suspect by the police.

"As a law enforcer, I have to be consistent with and abide by the constitution, legal morality and ethics," Widjojanto stated at his residence in Bojong Lio village, Cilodong, Depok city, West Java, on Saturday.

He pointed out that one of the articles of the KPK's laws mentions that if (a KPK commissioner) is named as a suspect, he or she will be discharged through a presidential decision. "So I am considering tabling a resignation letter to the KPK leader," he added.

"Let the KPK leader propose my dismissal to the president," he remarked.

The police named Bambang Widjojanto as a suspect over a regional election dispute in 2010.

According to spokesman for the police Inspector General Ronny Sompie, Widjojanto, who was arrested on Friday (January 23) morning, was charged with prompting witnesses to give false testimony at a session of the Constitutional Court on an election dispute in Kotawaringin Barat, Central Kalimantan, when he was still a lawyer in 2010.

Widjojanto, who joined the KPK later and became one of its five leaders, has not been arrested, but is being questioned by the police, Sompie revealed.

The police received the report on the case of the alleged false testimony only on January 15, which was backed by expert opinions and documents, he affirmed.

Sompie further noted that there is no link between Widjojanto's case and the KPK naming police Commissioner General Budi Gunawan as a corruption suspect on January, 13.

Gunawan was named as a corruption suspect after President Joko Widodo nominated him to replace General Sutarman as the next police chief.
