REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Air Force will purchase Russian Beriev Be-200 Altair, a multipurpose amphibious aircraft, to combat illegal fishing as well as secure Indonesian waters.

"The Be-200 can land in water. Illegal fishermen cannot get away from it," Chief of Staff at Indonesian Air Force, Ida Bagus Putu Dunia, said on Monday, December 12.

The aircraft can carry a team and equipment, including water bomb. Indonesia once had the similar aircraft in 1950s.

"It is effective to tackle illegal issues in waters," he said.

He said that the President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo agreed to the plan. Earlier, President Jokowi stated that he was furious about illegal fishing. He instructed the Ministry of Finance to purchase vessels to secure Indonesian waters. The purchase will be adjusted with State Budget.
