President provides Rp260 million assistance to former East Timor refugees

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has provided as much as Rp260 million as assistance to former East Timor refugees who now reside in Belu district that borders Timor-Leste.

The president provided the assistance during his visit to the district on Saturday. "We are very thankful to the president because during his visit to our place in the border area, he also provided us with Rp260 million as assistance," Satorlino Gonsalves, one of the former refugees, said here on Saturday (20/21).

During his working visit to East Nusa Tenggara on Friday and Saturday, President Jokowi had a number of activities scheduled in his agenda.

He arrived at Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, at 9.30 p. m. on Friday for the two-day visit to the country's eastern region.

President Jokowi and his entourage arrived at El Tari airport in a presidential plane, where they were welcomed by Governor Frans Lebu Raya.

On Saturday (December 20), Jokowi attended the province's 56th anniversary celebrations at the public square in the governor's official residence.

After attending the anniversary events, he flew to Belu district bordering Timor-Leste on a helicopter. There, he laid the cornerstone for the construction of the Reknamo Dam.

Jokowi also held a dialog with local people at the site of the project.

Before returning to Jakarta at 4.45 p. m., he inaugurated the Siloam General Hospital, according to a spokesman for East Nusa Tenggara, Lambertus Briti.
