REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Political expert Yunarto Wijaya said that President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo had an option on not following demand from Amnesty International. Recently, the organization asked Indonesian government to impose a moratorium on the implementation of the death penalty.
"It is a choice. Death penalty for drug convicts is a way to enforce law supremacy in Indonesia," Wijaya said on Sunday, December 7.
Death penalty, he said, was evidence that Indonesia did not discriminate law. "I believe that Jokowi has carried out several stages before imposing death penalty. Death penalty is the last choice," he said.
Earlier, Indonesia’s Junior Attorney General for General Crimes, Basyuni Masyarif, last week confirmed that the government is planning to execute five people before the end of the year. One of the five individuals facing imminent execution is detained in Tangerang, Banten province, another two in Batam, Riau Islands Province, and a further two in Nusakambangan, Central Java. The two from Nusakambangan have reportedly been convicted for murder and the three others for drug-related crimes.
