REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction in the House of Representatives (DPR) is opposed to the recent increase in the price of subsidized fuels, which is aimed at boosting people's economic growth.

"The PKS faction is of the opinion that the subsidized fuel price hike will raise prices significantly, worsen economic growth and increase unemployment and poverty rates," a member of the PKS faction, Jazuli Juwaini, said here on Tuesday (18/11).

He added that the high fuel price hike would significantly raise the cost of living of the people.

"The Rp2,000 per liter rise in the price of subsidized fuels will raise food prices by 15 percent, similar to the hikes seen in 2013 when full-year inflation rate stood at a range of 8 to 10 percent," he stated.

Juwaini further noted that the fuel price hike will also have a detrimental impact on the prospects of the domestic economy, which has slowed down significantly, and will worsen economic growth, which has fallen to 5.1 to 5.3 percent.

All these will deal a blow to the business world and, in turn, lead to a rise in the rate of unemployment, he remarked.

"The subsidized fuel price hike will raise the number of poor people significantly, despite the government's programs to compensate them for the hike. However, the programs is not likely to cover all poor people as their number will be on the rise," Juwaini explained.
