REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TEMANGGUNG -- The Temanggung Legislative Council (DPRD) is urging the local government to issue a tobacco trade regulation, considering that the plant is the main source of income for the local farmers.

The monopsony tobacco trade regulation in Temanggung tends to make the tobacco trade unstable, Slamet Eko Wantoro, one of the members of the legislative council from the United Development Party (PPP) claimed here on Wednesday.

"Currently, the farmers have begun producing high-quality tobacco, but the factories are experiencing overproduction as a result of which the farmers have to incur losses," Slamet pointed out.

Slamet further added that the local trading monopsony system is not healthy, which is a classic problem that has existed in Temanggung for several years and needs to be resolved.

One of the solutions to this problem is to issue a tobacco trade regional bill based on other tobacco producing regions, which have implemented the regulation, Slamet added.

The regulation is expected to cause more losses to the tobacco farmers.

"There are several regions that have issued the regional bill on tobacco, and it turns out to be beneficial to the farmers during the harvest season," Slamet added.

As one of the producers of high-quality tobacco, it will be naive if the region has yet to implement the regulation.

Slamet also emphasized that that the legislative council is ready to initiate the regulation to provide benefits to the farmers.
