Govt develops nine integrated regions at border areas

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Government through Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration developed nine integrated regions at border areas and outer islands in Indonesia. Government also continues to develop a total of 48 integrated regions in transmigration areas.

"Border region, including small islands, need for attention. We have to consider strategic value to maintain territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country," Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, Muhaimin Iskandar said recently.

In future, development of transmigration area must be conducted in coordination with ministries, agencies, local government and community, as well as business community to accelerate improvement of people welfare in border region. Director General of Transmigration Area Development, Jamaluddien Malik said that support of all parties for construction of basic infrastructure was needed to transform potential of area as new economic center.

"We continue to encourage role of local government and business community to develop investments in transmigration areas, especially at border regions through land support," Malik said.

Transmigration program aimed to support national development. It can be a solution to improve welfare of society. It has occurred over 60 years. At least, about 2.2 million families or equals to 8.8 million Indonesian citizens have been dispatched to transmigration areas.

Transmigration program has also created 3,425 new villages. About 383 villages have been developed into capital of district. One of them was transformed into a province, West Sulawesi.
