Rais: Beware of foreign intervention

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Former Chairman of Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly, Amien Rais warned Indonesia to take a lesson from political turmoil in Egypt. He added that geopolitical situation in the Middle East and foreign intervention were factors influencing internal politic in Egypt.  

"We must consider foreign interests have devided countrIes like Libya, Egypt, Syria and Iraq. It is possible that the perpetrator who devided those contries, could do the same to Indonesia," Rais dais on Tuesday.  

Indonesia has some potential risks because this country has diverse religions, ethnics, tribals, and customs. The former Chairman of Muhammadiyah - the largest modern Muslim organization in Indonesia - said conflict will open opportunity to global intervention. Rais warned that Indonesian civil society and military forces must maintain the integrity of Indonesia.

At least 20 Islamic institutions in Indonesia expressed their strong opposition over the military coup in Egypt. They call upon a number of authorities to immediately stop the action of violence that has cost more than 50 lives.
