Jakarta gubernatorial poll on September 20 sets as holiday

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi has issued a decree stipulating that the second round of Jakarta gubernatorial elections on September 20 as a holiday.

"Let`s use the holiday (Thursday) to cast votes," the minister said in his address at the declaration function of the peaceful Jakarta Gubernatorial/Vice Gubernatorial election at the National Monument (Monas) on Thursday.

Thus, all government and the private sector offices were urged to abide by the decree, he said. In addition, the government will also impose sanction against the offices which do not abide by the decree. 

Gamawan also encourage Jakarta residents to use their vote right during the local elections day. Two pairs of candidates to compete in the second round of the Jakarta gubernatorial election are Fauzi Bowo-Nachrowi Ramli and Joko Widodo-Basuki Tjahja Purnama.

Fauzi Bowo is the incumbent governor of Jakarta, while Joko Widodo is mayor of the Central Java`s city of Solo. In the first round the polls that took place on Saturday (July 7), six pairs of contestants who competed consisting of Fauzi Bowo-Nachrowi Ramli, Hendardji Soepandji-Ahmad Riza Patria, Joko Widodo-Basuki Tjahja Purnama, Hidayat Nur Wahid-Didik J Rachbini, Faisal Basrie-Biem Benjamin and Alex Nurdin-Nono Sumpono.
