REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Narcotics Detective Unit of the Metro Jaya Police has thwarted an attempt to smuggle illicit drugs worth Rp1.1 billion during this year's Ramadan fasting month in Jakarta and the surrounding areas.

"Circulation of the illicit goods is still rampant," spokesman of the Metro Jaya Police's Narcotics Detective Unit Adjunct Senior Commissioner M. Arsal Sahban remarked here on Thursday.

Arsal pointed out that public awareness was still low regarding the distribution and dangers of drugs.

According to the spokesman, the drug dealers had intensified their activities during Ramadan as they thought the security officers would not be vigilant.

Arsal noted that during Ramadan, the Metro Jaya Police had named 17 suspects for the circulation of illicit drugs, including a woman arrested with 294 Ecstasy pills, 574.2 grams of methamphetamine, and 27 kilograms of marijuana.
